How to Choose the Perfect Pineapple

We love fresh pineapple, especially raw, but also use it in desserts. In winter, we buy about two pineapples per week, so I’ve learned all the signs of a good pineapple. Here’s my step-by-step guide to picking the perfect pineapple.

👀 Visual Check

Start by looking at the pineapple’s color. The bottom part should be more yellow than the top. This yellow band is important—the higher it goes, the riper and sweeter the pineapple. Choose according to your taste. If you have diabetes, you might prefer a pineapple with a smaller yellow band to avoid excess sugars.

Check the leaves—they should be vibrant green and fresh, not dry or brown.

Look carefully for mold spots or bruises, and avoid pineapples with any.

👃 Smell Test

Sniff the base of the pineapple. It should have a clear fresh pineapple scent, slightly sweet. If there’s no smell or if it smells fermented or moldy, do not buy it.

✋ Feel Test

Touch the yellow part of the pineapple. It should feel firm with just a slight softness under your fingers. If it’s very soft and feels wet or mushy, it’s overripe—skip it.

🍃 Leaf Test

Try pulling a leaf from the center of the crown. If it comes off easily, as if it was loosely attached, the pineapple is ripe and ready.

🍽️ Final Notes

I always add pineapple to my shopping basket because it’s a delicious dessert that aids digestion, has anti-inflammatory and detoxifying effects, and helps fight cellulite. It’s best enjoyed fresh, especially after a heavy meal.
